Grade 7 Option Subjects

Grade 7 students will have the chance to involved in the following option subjects during the year:

  • Design & Technology (DT)
  • Drama
  • Computing
  • Music
  • Foods
  • Language Other than English (LOTE)

Students stay in their core classes for Options and will participate in all options over the year.

Grade 8 Option Subjects

Students in Grade 8 study one year-long Option subject and one half year Option subject.  Option choices are outlined in the booklet below.

Grade 8 Options have strong links to the wider range of Options available in Grade 9 to 12.  Students are encouraged to choose subjects from across learning areas to give them a wide range of experiences in preparation for making future course selections.  Options are a life-long opportunity and can provide a pathway to future study, training or recreation.

Inquiry Based Learning will be a strong focus in all Option subjects.  Students will be expected to complete literacy and numeracy (reading, writing and maths) tasks relevant to the subject they are working on.

Options selection will be a two phase process early in Term 4.  Students will be asked to indicate their preliminary selection followed by final choices.  Every effort will be made to run a class for each Option, however classes will depend on enough students in each class.  Timetable clashes may occasionally mean an alternative Option has to be selected.

Students are encouraged to consider personal interests, future study and employment when selecting Options.

Grade 9 & 10 Option Subjects

Students in Grade 9 and 10 study one year-long Option subject and one half year Option subject each year.  Option choices are outlined in the booklet below. Students in Grade 10 may choose different Options from Grade 9.

Students are encouraged to choose Options from each learning area over the two years to broaden their experience.

Options in Grade 9 and 10 can provide a strong pathway for future study or training or employment.

Fact Sheet for Schools

Year 11 & 12

The vast majority of today’s jobs require a Year 12 or higher qualification, and employers are looking for people who are flexible, adaptable and willing to learn new things.

Completing Year 12 or attaining equivalent qualifications should be the aim of all students in Tasmanian Government schools.

In Years 11 and 12, you will have access to a wide range of subjects and VET courses offered through a range of options:

  • Colleges and a growing number of high schools and district high schools offer a wide range of programs and study options. Some subjects are available online or through a shared enrolment with a nearby school. This means you will have additional access to subjects of interest and it may require you to study off campus.
  • Some programs are accessed through Trade Training Centre (TTC) facilities which are designed to provide practical training using industry-standard equipment.

Your chosen course may be a combination of these available options.  Discuss this with your Year 11/12 course counsellor.

For details on where subjects and programs are available go to the Where Do I Study 2020 table.

Teachers and other support staff in all secondary schools throughout the State will support your transition from Year 10 to Years 11/12

Enrolling in Years 11 and 12

If you are currently attending a Tasmanian Government school, your Year 10 coordinator or teachers will give you details about how you can access the information you need to enrol in Year 11.  Your school will make all the arrangements for your enrolment and you will have the opportunity to attend information and taster sessions.

Health & PE (Winter Sport - NHSSA)

There are many opportunities to be involved in sport throughout the year.  They include netball, football, basketball, soccer, hockey, swimming, athletics and cross country.

Winter sport is played in the winter months for Grade 9/10 Sports Studies students and, on occasions, Grade 8 students. Details will be available early in the year.

Our focus on sport is on participation and having fun.

Art

Some of the content of our Art course are:

  • Skills, knowledge and experiences in the areas of drawing, design, painting, printmaking, street art, ceramics, glass and collage.
  • Knowledge and experience using a range of materials and techniques.
  • Terms and language specific to Visual Arts.
  • The elements and principles of design.
  • Technical skills.
  • How to express ideas and feelings through your artwork.
  • How to work individually as well as in a group.
  • How to express thoughts and feelings about the artworks of others through both verbal and written communication.
  • Knowledge of artists and art styles through history and the relationship between art and culture.

Music

Through practical hands on work, and, with a direction of relative music understanding, students will further develop both their own personal playing ability, and playing in an ensemble situation.  Music is designed to give you the skills and understanding you need in today’s music industry.

Music is a very self directed subject.  Students will be given assistance and guidance and then expected to work to achieve the result they want.

Deloraine High School has been well represented in the "Battle of the Bands" competition and has won both Northern and State Finals on numerous occasions.

Homework

All students are encouraged to spend time learning at home.   Students should ideally have a quiet space in which to work.  In some areas homework will be set regularly and students need to ensure that they complete those tasks.  There will also be projects and assignments to work on and students will achieve at a higher level if they spend time on these at home.  It is clear that time spent reading is also beneficial for all students.

Library

The school has a well stocked Library that is open at some break times for quiet reading or study.  Eating or drinking is not permitted in this area at any time.  Students are encouraged to be active borrowers from the School Library.  If students mislay their books, please let the school office know.  Students will be issued with an account for lost books for which they are responsible.
