Connecting with your Teacher

Teachers will use different ways of delivering lessons to students and the learning materials for each subject.  Each teacher will work differently and they will let you know their expectations.  Some lessons will be delivered through video and screen sharing, online meetings, Youtube, Canvas, Teams and other formats.

The three main methods of delivery of your learning will be:

Online:  The subject work is online.  Follow instructions, complete work and submit online.

Post:     Work is posted to you for completion.  This must be posted or dropped off to the school.  Please ensure your name is on your work.

Email:    Your teacher will email you instructions, as well as reading material and assessment tasks.

Some teachers will use all three methods depending on content and also whether you have access to internet.

Please don't hesitate to contact your teacher or the school should you have any difficulties at all with any aspect of your learning.

Teachers will use the Australian Curriculum to provide the learning for your child. Your child may be asked to work on a project or learning tasks that use skills and knowledge from different subject areas.

Help your child prepare for the day, by reading through the instructions provided by their teacher. Encourage your child to work independently as much as possible, but help them when you can or when they need it.

Daily learning activities from the teacher/s may include:

  • English – Reading, writing, speaking and listening for a total of up to 45-60 minutes
  • Maths – Numbers and measurement for up to 30-45 minutes
  • Other subject areas across the week, for up to 60 -90 minutes
  • Physical activity and play up to I hour throughout the day

Teachers will use the Australian Curriculum or the Approved Learning Program to provide the learning for your young person. They may be asked to work on a project or learning tasks that use skills and knowledge from different subject areas.

Help your young person to work independently and balance online and offline tasks when they are learning by:

  • asking questions
  • asking if they need help
  • giving encouragement
  • being positive, flexible and supportive.

For Grades 9 and 10, daily learning activities from teachers may include:

  • English/literacy up to 60 minutes
  • Mathematics/numeracy up to 45 minutes
  • Other subject areas across the week, up to 90 minutes a day
  • Physical activity and exercise up to I hour spread throughout the day

Years 11 and 12

For Years 11 and 12your young person is engaged in an Approved Learning Program.

  • Continue with full time study which requires a minimum of 600 hours for the year.  This is approximately 4 – 5 hours per week per course

Some courses are shorter and some courses – particularly VET courses – can be longer. While learning at home there may be less contact time with teachers and peers and more independent learning required. Physical activity and exercise is encouraged for up to I hour spread throughout the day.

Please refer to Parent Info Sheet for more details on Years 11 and 12.
